Arklow Lifeboat Station is a RNLI lifeboat station located in the coastal town of Arklow, County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland. It was established in 1826, making it the oldest lifeboat station in Ireland.[1]
Since 1997, it has operated an All-weather Trent-class lifeboat, 14-19 Ger Tigchelaar (ON 1223).[2]
History[edit]
A lifeboat was first placed at Arklow in 1826 by the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, later to become the RNLI, but in 1830, the station was closed, and the boat was relocated to Newcastle, County Down.
The station was reopened by the RNLI in 1857[2] after a series of maritime disasters.[3]
A new boathouse was built in 1873, and adapted in 1912 to house the stations first motorised lifeboat.[4]
In 2023, it was announced that Arklow were being assigned a new Shannon-class lifeboat as a replacement for Ger Tigchelaar, due to arrive in 2024.[5]
