Stephanie Isuma (born June 10, 1991) better known as Calabar Chic, is a Nigerian actress, screenwriter, comedienne, MC and content creator. She is from Yala local government area of Cross River State, Nigeria. She gained prominence through her comedy skits on social media often using Ibibio-Efik accents.[1][2]

Early life and education[edit]

Calabar Chic was born in Kano, Nigeria, as the second child and the only daughter in a family of six children. She attended Jireh Education Centre for her primary education and El-Emmanuel's Academy for secondary education both in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Later, she pursued a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and in Film Editing from the Delyork Creative Academy Film School in Lagos also, she has a doctorate award from the Institute of Corporate Public Administrators of Nigeria.[3][4][5]

Calabar Chic gained a social media following after one of her Instagram videos went viral in 2016. Calabar Chic began her acting career in 2015 after delivering a script to a director. She has been featured in several Nollywood films, television series and commercials.[6] Some of her notable film roles include:

Calabar Chic has said she never envisioned herself as a comedian, and only pursued comedy after gaining attention for her comedic videos. She has participated in stand-up comedy shows such as Shakara and The Gang and The AY Show. Her unique Ibibio-Efik accent became a signature style, endearing her to fans.[15]

Calabar Chic also has an influential voice in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states of Nigeria, especially in governance, leadership, and efficient service delivery. She is recognised as an ambassador of sports and cinematography in Cross River State.[16][17]

Personal life[edit]

Calabar Chic battled depression after a traumatic experience of rape at the age of 14. She has attempted suicide twice, and has shared her story to raise awareness about mental health and sexual abuse. She has also suffered from fibroids.[18][19][20]

In 2016, Calabar Chic had a near-death experience when she was stuck in a burning building; she managed to crawl out, surviving with a few bruises.[21] In 2018, she and her friend were reportedly kidnapped by Fulani herdsmen and were kept hostage for 5 days.[22]
