BMO (also known as Beemo, Be MOre, Mo Mastro "Llabtoof" Giovanni Junior, and the "New King of Ooo") is a small, living video game console from the animated television series, Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward. BMO also appears in both of the spin-off shows, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, and the latest series, Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake.

Voiced by Niki Yang, BMO is a robot created by "Moe" Giovanni, whose purpose is to learn how to play and have fun with others. In the episode, "Be More," Moe tells the main characters of the series, Finn and Jake, that he "made BMO to be more."[1] Along with being a living video game console, BMO has many other daily functions as well, including: a portable electrical outlet, camera, alarm clock, music player, flashlight, strobe light, keyboard, and video player.

The little robot resides in a massive tree fort with his roommates, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, along with many other characters like the pie-throwing robot, N.E.P.T.R. (Nepter), and Shelby, the talking worm that lives inside Jake's viola.

Character[edit]

Personality[edit]

BMO is the embodiment of a weird little kid. In season 4, episode 2 of Adventure Time, they can be seen talking to their alter-ego, Football. Football only ever appears in the bathroom window, where BMO likes to pretend to urinate sometimes. BMO has many odd encounters, like dancing on the shoulders of "bikini babes." or demanding woodland creatures to bow down to the "New King of Ooo." In a special episode titled. "BMO Lost," BMO falls in love with a bubble, otherwise known as Air, who later becomes their fiance.

Characteristics[edit]

Adorned with red, green and yellow buttons, coupled by a teal finish, BMO has an uncanny resemblance to the Nintendo Game Boy, a handheld gaming device that was released in Japan in 1989.[2] BMO has many qualities related to technology, featuring a usb port, tape player, dvd player, microphone, and wired game controllers. BMO has multiple interfaces within his system, including a heart of gold, as can be seen in the first episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, "BMO."

Development[edit]

BMO's character was conceptualized by Patrick McHale and Pendleton Ward, but BMO wasn't always the familiar little game boy we know now. Their past self was named R.A.Y.E., or Raye.[3] While preparing an animated short for Cartoon Network, Patrick created a little robot boy that Pendleton Ward loved. However, Raye's character was later adapted into BMO when Adventure Time was picked up by the network.

According to an interview Niki Yang had with Channel Frederator on YouTube, Niki had been approached by Ward on the production set for Adventure Time, asking her to read some voice overs for BMO. After a few reads, Pendleton had ultimately decided to move forward with Niki, who was now the voice of two Adventure Time characters, including Lady Rainicorn. Niki is originally from South Korea, gifting BMO with a soft Korean accent.[4]

BMO had some early voice actors before Niki took over, including Adventure Time's own Dee Bradley Baker (voice of Cinnamon Bun) and Thurop Van Orman (voice of the Tree Witch).

Appearances[edit]

BMO's first debut episode of Adventure Time was in season 1, episode 8 of the series, titled "Business Time," released in 2010. In this episode, Finn and Jake save some frozen business men from an iceberg. After the business men started to "business too hard," our protagonists had to wrangle them in before anyone got hurt. BMO became a main character up until the series finale released in 2018, "The Ultimate Adventure: Come Along With Me." Our protagonists and their friends prepare for war, a war they were undoubtedly unprepared for, closing out the show with a 45 minute special episode.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands[edit]

BMO's first and last appearance in "Adventure Time: Distant Lands" was the first episode, titled "BMO." Released in 2020, the episode took place before the events of Adventure Time, making it a previously untold story of BMO's history. In summary, BMO crash lands in a synthetic, ecosystem-like space station, where they befriend a young researcher named Y5. Sheriff BMO and their deputy race against the clock to save the space station from collapse, leading BMO into their first encounter with Jake the Dog and Finn the Human.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake[edit]

In the 2023 release of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, BMO appeared in episode 8, titled "Jerry." Stranded in a wasteland, Fionna, Cake, and Simon encounter a creature wearing a brown owl mask with glowing green eyes. Behind the mask, however, hides sweet little BMO, who then helps the protagonists on their journey through the multiverse.
